Abstract

Cities are at the centre of political, social and economic moves. These moves cause urban space and urban people to constantly transform and shape each other. In today's cities, these transformations and interactions cause a number of negativities in the lives of the citizens and especially responsibility and participation levels of the citizens are gradually weakening. In this study, our aim is to develop a scale to determine the degree of participation of the citizens. In this scale (Urban Citizen Participation Scale), the population of the study consists of urban residents over 18 years old living in Ankara and Kırıkkale. As a result of the interviews conducted with the candidates, 1105 questionnaires were collected. KMO and Bartlett’s Tests were used to measure the appropriateness of the questionnaire questions to factor analysis and factor analyses were conducted to reveal the structural validity of the scale. With this scale, participation levels in cities can be determined and with the data obtained, some ideas can be reached about what needs to be done especially in terms of being more active in civil, political and social aspects.
